Supporting Our Public School Teachers

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Over 500 members and supporters of the local teacher’s union packed into the Vigo County Public Library this morning, and Niall and I were there to stand with them. They were gathered to protest recent charter school, voucher, and right to work legislation proposed by Republicans in Indianapolis. Only one state Democrat braved the state troopers to speak to the audience, but even our absent Democratic Representatives garnered more applause than the five Republican panel members combined. “We knew we were walking into a bit of a hornet’s nest,” said one of the Republicans.

At a time when America is falling behind other countries in math and science scores, we should not let Republicans pretend that we can fight the deficit by slashing teachers’ salaries and benefits. They picked Wisconsin to start the fight because teachers there are actually paid above the national average, and produce above average results. Teaching is not a part-time job, and it does not pay well. But it’s a critical profession for our country’s future. In this day and age, you don’t often see uneducated people founding companies and creating jobs! And private schools are not the answer. Your average Terre Haute resident cannot afford private schooling for their children. While charter schools do offer certain benefits, the lottery systems that come with them are not welcome here. Traditional public schools have lasted us for over 150 years. I’m an example of the product that comes out of public schooling, pre-school through 12th grade. And the average teacher’s salary in my district was just $30k/year. They had to pick up second jobs just to afford homes. It’s no wonder that some teachers are failing some students – they’re probably too worried about their mortgage payment to do their planning! Please stand with me in supporting our teachers in every way possible.

The Redefinition of Public Service in America

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Some important quotes from this week’s State of the Union address:

“We need a government more competent and efficient,” “a 21st Century Government that is open and competent,” … and one that will “re-instill people’s faith in Government.”

In this week’s Newsweek, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal reminded us that public service does not just mean “military.”

We have let the concept of service become dangerously narrow, often associated only with the military.  This allows most Americans to avoid the sense of responsibility essential for us to care for our nation – and for each other.  We expect and demand less of ourselves than we should.  And now is the time to fix it.  ‘Service member’ should not apply only to those in uniform, but to us all.  The concept of national service is not new, nor is it outdated.  When America needs it, national service is the personal obligation of every American.  And she needs it now.  All of us bear an obligation to serve – an obligation that goes beyond paying taxes, voting, or adhering to the law.  America is falling short in endeavors that occur far away from any battlefield: education, science, politics, the environment, and cultivating leadership, among others. Without a sustained focus on these foundations of our society, America’s long-term security and prosperity are at risk.

Public service includes firefighters, policemen, doctors and emergency medical crews. It includes teachers, scientists, legislatures and executives. To these ends I hope to serve in the best way I can, and I hope that you will support the work of great organizations who work to rebuild our faith in public service careers like the US Public Service Academy. There’s no reason why we should price our students out of public service careers due to the corrupt student loan lending system and historical stigmas.
